Healthy Medicine Project

The Healthy Medication Use Program is a partnership between First Nations and Inuit Health Branch and Healing Our Spirit, to promote safe and proper use of medication, through increased awareness.

The goal of the Healthy Medication Use Program is to support and advocate on behalf of communities in the area of prescription drug use, through the development of effective learning tools, prevention and intervention strategies, and in any other capacities needed to address addictive medication use.

The non-medical use of prescription drugs is a serious and growing health problem. Prescription medications such as pain relievers, tranquillizers, stimulants and sedatives can be very useful treatment tools but sometimes people do not take them as directed and may become addicted.  Nearly all medications have the potential to cause harm and when they are misused the consequences can be dangerous or even fatal.

Healthcare providers, primary care physicians, pharmacists, educators, leadership, and patients themselves can all play a role in identifying and preventing prescription drug misuse.

For more information on prevention and intervention strategies that may be helpful to your community please feel free to contact me at any time.
